This exuberant production drawing captures Scrooge McDuck at one of the most joyful moments of Mickey’s Christmas Carol—around the 22:19 mark, when the once-gloomy miser bursts out in delight to celebrate Christmas. Rendered in black and blue pencil on 3-peghole animation paper and marked 73 on the lower left, the piece is attributed to Glen Keane, the Disney Legend whose extraordinary talent helped define the expressive, emotionally rich animation style of the Disney Renaissance. In this drawing, Scrooge’s wide, jubilant movement is alive with energy—every line vibrating with newfound warmth and redemption. Original works like this are not only a testament to Keane’s artistic mastery, but also to the enduring power of Disney storytelling: a celebration of transformation, generosity, and the timeless spirit of Christmas brought vividly to life through the animator’s hand.

Released in 1983, Mickey’s Christmas Carol marked the long-awaited return of Mickey Mouse to the big screen after a 30-year absence. This heartwarming adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale brought together nearly all of Disney’s beloved characters in a story of redemption, generosity, and joy. Scrooge McDuck, inspired by his comic book namesake created by Carl Barks, was perfectly cast as Ebenezer Scrooge—a role that felt written just for him. The short was directed by Burny Mattinson, a Disney veteran who began his career as an in-betweener on Lady and the Tramp and went on to become one of the studio’s most celebrated storytellers. Fun fact: the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short, reaffirming Disney’s mastery of heartfelt holiday storytelling.

Owning an original production drawing from Mickey’s Christmas Carol is to hold a piece of Disney’s creative rebirth in the 1980s—a moment when hand-drawn animation regained its emotional depth and artistry. This drawing of Scrooge McDuck, attributed to the great Glen Keane, embodies the warmth and spirit of that revival: every pencil stroke radiates the joy of newfound generosity and the wonder of rediscovered hope. For collectors, it is more than artwork—it is a fragment of cinematic magic, a tangible reminder of how animation can illuminate the very best of the human (and duck) heart.
