This original animation drawing can be seen at minute 4:12 of the short film "Mickey’s Rival" on online views, first short film questioning the romance between Mickey and Minnie. Here we have one of the few old Minnie’s drawings that you could purchase, on her more romantic expression. Right in the center of the artwork we can see a production note marking 61A on red pencil. The artwork is numbered 63A on the lower right side.
Directed by Disney Legend Wilfred Jackson, infamous for directing films such as "Peter Pan" or "Alice in Wonderland", this short film was released on June 20th 1936 in full Technicolor. This feature is about a picnic organized by Mickey for his girlfriend Minnie, suddenly interrupted by Mortimer, a Minnie old friend that during the story becomes "Mickey’s Rival".
This feature is the first appearance ever of Mortimer, an arrogant mouse that tries to steal the heart of Minnie Mouse. Mortimer's name is not a coincidence: when creating Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney wanted to call him Mortimer, but Lilly, his wife, told him she did not like that name and suggested he to call the mouse Mickey. Now, "Mickey’s Rival" is named after Walt’s original idea for the studio icon!
