"Stay where you are, or the girl dies” said Professor Ratigan. Here we can see an example of his diabolical personality in this original animation drawing that features a terrified Olivia, as seen at the 1:03:11 mark of the 1986 Disney animated film “The Great Mouse Detective”. While Ratigan is drawn on black colored pencil, Olivia is drawn on blue colored pencil and presents a production note saying “move head to here”. The artwork was drawn on panoramic paper and is noted 39EE on the upper right side and 39 on the lower right side.

Released in 1986, “The Great Mouse Detective” is a lesser-known gem in Disney’s animated filmography that deserves a spotlight for combining mystery, humor and heartwarming moments, and also for showcases Disney’s ability to create new ways of animation and storytelling. This film featured the first scene that combined traditionally-animated characters with CGI backgrounds ever, and its attention to detail paved the way for Disney’s future films, saving the studio from bankruptcy.

The Great Mouse Detective” may not have garnered the same attention as some of Disney’s more iconic films, but Ratingan is without any doubt one of the best created villains, and this artwork proves how the studio animators are truly artists. It should be yours right away!
