"Ariel, how many times must we go through this?". In this iconic scene from "The Little Mermaid", King Triton does his best to parent his youngest daughter, Ariel. Here, we present a large key animation drawing of the King, attributed to his animation supervisor and Disney Legend, Andreas Deja. Triton is rendered in blue pencil, and this moment appears around the 12:57 mark of the film. The piece includes various animation notes, along with an animation rule in the upper right corner of the paper. The drawing is marked 25/30 in the lower center and T59 in the lower right corner.
Disney Legend Andreas Deja is renowned for animating some of Disney’s most iconic characters, including villains like Gaston, Jafar, and Scar. Joining Disney in the early 1980s, Deja became known for his ability to convey deep personality through expressive animation. His work spans heroes and villains alike, showcasing his versatility and leaving a lasting impact on animation.
Beyond its cultural impact, “The Little Mermaid” marked a significant technological advancement for Disney animation. The film utilized a combination of traditional hand-drawn animation and innovative computer-generated imagery, allowing for breathtaking underwater scenes and intricate character movements. In this film, Disney introduced a Computer Animation Production System that changed the path for animation and received an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Scientific and Engineering award.
